On September 25, 2022, a legendary boxing bout took place at Saitama Super Arena, Japan. The significance of this fight was tremendous.
Mayweather, the world’s best contemporary boxer, after retiring in 2017 ending with a transboundary fight with Conner McGregor, alleged to be returning to fight Mikuru Asakura on September 25, 2022.
Asakura is a Japanese mixed martial artist who was a former 143 and 154 pound Fighting Network Rings champion. Risking his undefeated career reputation, this is the second time Mayweather attended performance boxing with Japanese fighters, making this contest highly lucrative for both sides. Even acknowledging the strength and skill gap between the undefeated Mayweather (record 50-0 in boxing) and Asakura (record 16-3 in MMA), millions of Japanese fans believe in Asakura’s ability to beat the odds.
Throughout the fight, Asakura performed a decent exhibition of solid body shots with the southpaw stance to Mayweather in the first round. However, after getting familiar with the pace and rhythm of his opponent, Mayweather knocked out Asakura just before the second round’s bell rang with a strong right hand. Asakura tried to stand up again but failed to do so.
Throughout the fight, Asakura performed a decent exhibition of solid body shots with the southpaw stance to Mayweather in the first round. Asakura tried to stand up again, but failed to do so.
After the fight, Mayweather proclaimed his appreciation towards the fight, and confirmed that he will be back in the ring again.
A number of students on campus were interviewed upon their views towards the fight.
“I was surprised how well Asakura fought against Mayweather. I thought he couldn't even land any punch on him but he landed some good ones. The result didn’t really surprise me but the details of the fight did. I think Mayweather will have some exhibition to entertain people and earn a lot of money” said Haoto Suzuki, a junior who loves boxing.
“It was truly an amazing fight; both boxers performed their best skills during the game” declared David Hong, also a junior, “I can foresee the revival of the age of Mayweather. Easy money for him!”
