Fall into Fashion 2024

"Style is something each of us already has, all we need to do is find it."

—Diane von Furstenberg

As the Stevenson Fall semester 2024 approaches, the fashion world is buzzing with excitement about seasonal trends and reflecting on the return to the routines of the school year. With students heading back to class and the start of a new academic chapter, fashion takes on a more functional yet stylish role, blending the need for comfort with a desire for self-expression. The intersection of fall fashion and the “back-to-school” atmosphere creates a unique space where individuality and practicality merge seamlessly.

This fall, the dominant color palette feels especially in tune with the back-to-school energy, as deep, earthy tones evoke the grounding feeling of settling into routines. At the same time, chunky and colorful necklaces and bracelets add a touch of color that expresses the excitement of fresh beginnings. As students return to campus, they’ll find themselves gravitating toward pieces that make a statement and are versatile enough to transition from the classroom to after-school activities. Expect to see layers playing a significant role—whether oversized knits worn over light dresses or jackets paired with cute and comfortable jeans, these outfits are built for comfort and style. Let’s take a glimpse into our student community and how they feel about their shift in fashion this season.

10th grader Kate Venema shares, “ I feel like the change of seasons or weather changes my style. For example, during the summer I like to wear less, such as shorts, a tank top, or lightweight clothing.” Taking this into account, how did Kate’s style change from summer to now?: “In contrast to the summer, my style has developed. I feel, like, more me. In summer I wear trendy clothes, but now I wear more stuff that I like.”

As some students struggle to navigate busy school schedules, that does not mean sacrificing fashion. The season is embracing a balance of comfort-driven pieces, such as cozy cardigans and relaxed trousers, with more structured, polished elements. Think of an outfit that works for the classroom but easily transitions to a late afternoon study session at Carmel Bakery. Accessories, too, are making a strong statement this fall. Functional bags, including spacious Longchamps, unique totes, and backpacks with a creative design, are making their way back into fashion, serving as both a style element and an essential school necessity.

Personal expression is at the heart of fall 2024. As students return to school, they are bringing their sense of identity into the mix, from statement outerwear to creative pairings of old favorites and new pieces. Whether it is vintage-inspired looks or a fresh take on classic school uniform staples, there is a clear emphasis on individuality. Fashion has always played a role in how we present ourselves, and as students step into the new school year, they will be experimenting with styles that allow them to express who they are while embracing the cozy, comforting elements of fall.
