Top 5 Fall shows/movies to watch!

Fall is the season that feels comfortable for most. For the majority of places, it’s sunny in the daytime and cold at night. So, what do people do in their free time during this cozy season? Oftentimes, people are curled up in bed looking for something to watch. Well, luckily, here’s a list of five recommended shows/movies to watch during this crimson-gold season!

#1. Gilmore Girls

Of course, we had to include the classic Gilmore Girls. Gilmore Girls follows Lorelai and her teenage daughter Rory, who live in the quirky small town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Lorelai became a mom when she was very young, so she and Rory have a super close relationship and often feel more like best friends. The story follows Rory as she deals with school, friendships, growing up, and eventually figuring out what she wants for her future, while Lorelai navigates her own connections, career, and complicated relationship with her wealthy parents. The 2000’s series also focuses heavily on family drama, friendships, school, and the little events happening around Stars Hollow, which makes it feel really cozy and character-focused. 

Gilmore Girls is a great fall show because the small town of Stars Hollow has lots of colorful leaves, cozy cafés, and little fall festivals that make the show feel like autumn. The characters also wear sweaters, jackets, scarves, and boots, while Rory’s school and bookish lifestyle give it that perfect back-to-school feeling. The show also has a warm, nostalgic feeling that makes you think of chilly days, coffee runs, and staying inside while it rains. Even though the show takes place throughout the whole year, the cozy Connecticut setting and small-town atmosphere make the fall episodes especially comforting.

#2. Hocus Pocus

If you’re looking for something a bit more spooky, Hocus Pocus is the movie for you! Hocus Pocus follows Max, a teenager who has recently moved to Salem, Massachusetts, with his little sister Dani. On Halloween night, Max accidentally brings the Sanderson sisters, three witches who were executed hundreds of years ago, back to life. The witches return with a plan to become powerful again, but they only have until sunrise to do it. Max, Dani, and their new friend Allison have to figure out how to stop the sisters before they can stay alive permanently. The main plot of the story is about Max trying to protect Dani while the three friends work together to outsmart the witches and break their magic before Halloween night ends. Hocus Pocus is a great fall movie because it is set on Halloween night, so you get pumpkins, costumes, candles, spooky houses, and all the classic October decorations. The movie takes place in a small Massachusetts town, which adds colorful fall trees, chilly nighttime scenes, and that cozy autumn atmosphere. It also has the perfect Halloween-night feeling because the story revolves around three witches coming back and causing chaos in the town. The combination of magic, Halloween traditions, fall scenery, and a little bit of spooky fun makes it feel like the perfect movie to watch in October with a blanket and some snacks.

#3. Fantastic Mr. Fox

If you’re looking for something a little less spooky and more laughs, then Fantastic Mr. Fox is the movie for you! Fantastic Mr. Fox follows Mr. Fox, a clever fox who goes back to his old habit of stealing food from three farmers after promising his wife he would settle down. The farmers become determined to catch him, forcing Mr. Fox, his family, and the other animals to work together and find a new way to survive. Fantastic Mr. Fox is a great fall movie because throughout the film, there is a warm, comfy autumn look with orange and brown colors, changing leaves, farms, pumpkins, and chilly countryside scenery. 

The story takes place around farms and fields, which gives it a peaceful harvest-season feeling that is especially perfect in October and November. It also has a really cozy atmosphere with fireplaces, warm meals, little homes, and the characters bundled up in their fall clothes. Even though it’s not specifically a Halloween movie, it has a whimsical, nostalgic fall feeling that makes you want to watch it on a cold evening with a blanket and snacks. Plus, the stop-motion animation makes everything look extra charming and storybook-like, so it feels like reading a cozy autumn book come to life.

#4. Coco

For another warm and nostalgic fall watch, Coco is the perfect choice. Coco follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician, even though his family has banned music for generations. On Día de los Muertos, Miguel accidentally ends up in the Land of the Dead, where he meets his deceased relatives and discovers that his family’s history is more complicated than he thought. As Miguel searches for the famous musician he believes is his great-great-grandfather, he learns secrets about his family and what really happened in the past. Along the way, Miguel has to figure out what matters more: following his dream, honoring his family, and making sure the people he loves are never forgotten. 

Coco is perfect for this season because of its warm colors, cempasuchil flowers, and lively family celebrations. Coco also takes place during Día de los Muertos in late October/early November, giving it that cozy, colorful autumn feeling while still having a little bit of a spooky Halloween atmosphere.

#5. Little Women

And last but definitely not least, Little Women. Little Women follows the four March sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy, as they grow up together while their father is away fighting in the Civil War. They each have different dreams and personalities, and the story follows them through family life, friendships, romance, and the challenges of growing up. As they get older, the sisters begin going down different paths, and they have to deal with love, changes in their relationships, and growing apart while still staying close as a family. 

Little Women is a wonderful fall movie because it has everything that makes autumn feel snug: colorful leaves, chilly weather, sweaters, fireplaces, warm food, books, and a beautiful Massachusetts setting. The March sisters spend so much time together at home, which gives the movie that warm, nostalgic feeling of staying inside on a cold fall day. The movie also has a really strong back-to-school/bookish fall vibe because Jo is constantly writing and reading, and the sisters are always learning, talking, and working toward their dreams. You get lots of scenes with walks through the changing leaves, cozy conversations by the fire, and quiet afternoons at home.
