What Your Jewelry Says About You

The jewelry that you wear can influence the way people view you, and the way you feel. Jewelry is more than just a materialistic item, it impacts one’s mood, and can symbolize who they are, along with helping others understand who they are trying to be represented as. Everyone has their own unique style of jewelry, and different reasons for wearing jewelry. Whether it is to express themselves, symbolize something, or just the accessories themselves, the capabilities of jewelry can be taken to various extents.

The jewelry you wear and why you wear it could tell something about your life or the person you are. Wealth, status, and culture can be displayed from the jewelry you wear, while others might wear specific jewelry to symbolize relationships they have.

For 9th grader Jacquelyn Shu, she wears specific jewelry depending how it matches her outfit, or how she is feeling that day. But there are certain pieces of jewelry that she does not take off despite being able to. For Shu that specific piece is her butterfly bracelet. She describes jewelry as something “fundamental to my style…[Jewelry] is an addition to my personality” she adds, “jewelry is not just a style, it is sentimental to me.” For Shu, jewelry helps her express her style and personality, with the colors of her jewelry reflecting the colors she likes to wear on a daily basis.

Furthermore, the dainty and simpler jewelry she wears reflects the more reserved personality Shu has. For example, they symbolize her close relationship with her family and friends. When asked what pieces of jewelry symbolize further, she describes a specific piece of jewelry saying, “My Van Cleef & Arpels Sweet Butterflies Bracelet is a piece of jewelry that I wear everyday, because my mom and sister have the same bracelet as well, so whenever I wear it I think of them. My best friend has the same bracelet in gold, so we both wear it to symbolize our friendship as well. When I wear the bracelet I think of them all.” Although on the surface jewelry may seem to be a materialistic item that is an embellishment, the symbolization of jewelry is more important to the wearer.

From a few bangles, a dainty watch, or colorful rings, one can get a lot from just what one wears. Many people have a style or preference of jewelry they like whether they know it or not, and this preference can display their personality. For example, wearing rose gold can symbolize love, warmth, and kindness. Someone who has those qualities may lean towards that type of gold to portray them with a more welcoming look. Gold is a medal that is bright and can reflect a warm look to your face, so when wearing gold one can be portrayed with a softer look. Whether you wear rose gold, gold, or silver, jewelry can make you appear in the way you want to be portrayed.

Wearing bangles or chunkier jewelry can also reflect your personality; for freshman Kate Solomon, she enjoys wearing statement pieces and bold rings or bangles. She says, “I wear chunkier and colorful jewelry, because I really like the way it looks.” Solomon has a really outgoing and vibrant personality, and her jewelry demonstrates it. The jewelry she wears is often layered, colorful, and bold, compared to Shu who wears dainty jewelry. The differences between their jewelry is similar to their different personalities.

Wearing jewelry can improve your mood, induce the excitement of dressing up, and look put together for a new day. You may wear jewelry for a plethora of reasons: because it makes you happy, because you're a fashionable person that likes wearing dainty or intricate jewelry, etc.. Whether this is intentional or not, the jewelry you wear can describe who you are as a person. The different types of jewelry and brands offered across the spectrum can help people express who they are and symbolize something about the wearer, a relationship or past experience.
