After a successful fall sports season, the winter PCAL(Pacific Collegiate Athletic League) season is starting. Both boys’ and girls’ soccer had success last winter season, as boys were NorCal Finalists, and girls’ soccer entered CCS. For basketball, the boys' team also entered the CCS Bracket, and the girls' team had a successful season in the league with Coach Justin Clymo.
Boys Soccer
Last year, Stevenson's Boys' Soccer team had one of the most successful seasons in school history. After securing their first CCS title and making their debut in the CIF NorCal Finals, this team now aims to build a consistent winning streak this year. Although the team lost a total of nine seniors and transferred students, the team is aiming to match the skill level and the success from last season.
The team had multiple changes, most crucially Coach Toby Elmore’s departure. His replacement was CSUMB Women’s Assistant Coach Cristian Materazzi, a coach with 20 years of collegiate coaching background and two years of experience at the professional level.
The team also looks forward to competing in the Third Tom Moore Invitational Tournament. Although the teams to be played are not decided for the tournament, the team aims for a successful pre-season tournament.
The group is off to a great start. This year’s team finally beat Seaside for the first time, an achievement that seemed insurmountable for the last three years. A great performance is eagerly anticipated.
Girls Soccer
Girl’s Soccer also had a successful season last year, winning the 23/24 PCAL Santa Lucia Division (4th Division in PCAL). This year, the Girl’s Soccer team was promoted to PCAL Cypress Division, and is looking forward to facing strong teams such as Seaside, Greenfield, and more.
The Girls’ Soccer Head Coach Philip Koshi shared his insights on the team during an interview. Koshi emphasized the San Francisco trip the girls had. He says, “It is a good chance to play some teams we don’t get to see, and a great opportunity to have some team bonding.” Coach Koshi adds, “We have some good leadership; Ava Edwards, Georgia Bonifas, and Emi Wheat are our three captains. They all have multiple years of Varsity experience, so I’m excited to see them lead the team for the future.”
The fans look forward to a great season ahead.
Boys Basketball
The Stevenson School Boys' Basketball games have become a highlight of the season, drawing significant attention from the student body. Home games, in particular, feature a packed student section, creating an electrifying atmosphere that energizes players and fans alike. This enthusiastic support reflects the strong school spirit and community engagement surrounding the team.
Lincoln Fung and Tyler Hwang, two Boys' Basketball players, shared additional insights on the sport. Fung exclaimed a successful start to the season by saying, “We had a scrimmage against Alisal High School. It was a great opportunity to see what our team looks like currently.” Hwang added, “Although the results of the first scrimmage weren’t good, we see it as an opportunity to get better from this starting point.”
Although the players say the first several games were not the most ideal, the team will only get better from here. There is anticipation for a noteworthy performance.
Girls Basketball
The Girls' Basketball team also draws packed student sections to the gym, showcasing the same enthusiastic support. Now in their second year under Coach Justin Clymo, the team is gearing up for a competitive season in the PCAL Mission Division. They are excited for a series of pre-season games in December, followed by the start of league play in January.
Although the team lost many seniors from last year such as Emma Hall, Maya Chavez, and Sarah Vanoli, the team has younger players looking forward to replacing those graduating seniors. An impressive performance is eagerly awaited.
With a month remaining until the start of the PCAL (Pacific Collegiate Athletic League), there are still plenty of exciting preseason games to enjoy. Each game provides an opportunity to witness the hard work and dedication of Stevenson’s athletes as they prepare for league competition.
